Settlement Agreement Template (Plain Language)

What this is: a plain-language settlement agreement you can fill in when you and the other side agree to resolve the case, before the hearing or in the hallway on hearing day (step 9 of the roadmap).

Before you sign: a settlement can end your right to pursue the claim, so read it slowly. Consider having it reviewed by a lawyer or your court's self-help center, especially for larger amounts. Ask the clerk or mediator how your court records settlements; some courts can turn one into an order or judgment, others dismiss the case. Check your court's rules.

This information is for educational purposes only. It is not legal advice. Rules, deadlines, fees and forms vary by state and court. Check your court's rules or self-help center before you act.
